Ashwagandha. It is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, a traditional form of alternative medicine based on Indian principles of natural healing. It’s been used for thousands of years to relieve stress, increase energy levels, and improve concentration… let’s talk about it and why it could be beneficial to you:

It’s stress busting: it’s classified as an “adaptogen,” meaning that it can help your body manage stress.

Ashwagandha appears to help control mediators of stress, including heat shock proteins (Hsp70), cortisol, and stress-activated c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK-1).

It may improve athletic performances: studies have indicated that taking Ashwagandha significantly enhances maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) in healthy adults and athletes. It may also help increase muscle strength!

It can reduce blood sugar levels through its effect on insulin secretion and sensitivity. It has certain compounds that may help stimulate your cells to take in glucose from your bloodstream.

On tests done on animals and test tube studies, it has been found that ashwagandha helps induce apoptosis, which is the programmed death of cancer cells. It is also believed that it promotes the formation of reactive oxygen species inside cancer cells, disrupting their function.  Tests on humans have yet to be done – but it looks promising!

It may improve sleep: as it helps reduce anxiety levels, this can help promote healthy sleep and it can help people feel more alert when they wake up.

It can reduce the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.

Fertility: It may have an impact in the fertility of men!

It may also help decrease inflammation: Ashwagandha contains compounds, including WA, that may help reduce inflammation in the body and may even act as a pain reliever. It may also help to lower blood pressure.

Did you know that  “Ashwagandha” is Sanskrit for “smell of the horse,” which refers to both its unique smell and ability to increase strength.
