On the 29th March, the clocks spring forward for daylight savings, we lose an hour of sleep…. but gain a little extra light. While longer, sunnier days can be very uplifting, it might initially leave us feeling a little off balance and out of sync and can even impact our sleep.

“The clocks going forward can make you feel off kilter for a few days, but it can have an even bigger impact on your sleep if you let it. Remember that sleep is a cycle, and maintaining a routine is crucial if you want to fall asleep easily and stay out of it until the morning. I always think of daylight savings as the start of summer, but, while longer days and warmer weather are a definite plus, if you’re not sleeping well, you can’t even enjoy the sun properly. Fortunately, by taking steps to make sure our bedrooms are the perfect environment for sleeping, we can enjoy a good night’s rest and longer days at the same time.” Phil Lawlor, Sleep Expert at Dormeo

Beyond sleep, the time change is also a natural opportunity to pause and reflect. Life moves quickly, and it’s easy to get caught in habits or routines that no longer serve us.

The extra daylight can serve as a reminder to check in with yourself and notice what truly supports your mind, body, and spirit.

Adjusting to the time change

As our bodies adjust to the new schedule, here are some easy ways to support yourself:

  • Make sure to prioritise sleep: try going to bed 15-20 minutes earlier in the days leading up to the change
  • Embrace morning light: just a few minutes of morning light can help reset your internal clock and lift your mood.
  • Enjoy small rituals: incorporate small grounding routines like journaling, mediation or even a skincare routine to anchor you in the moment
  • Listen to your body: so many of us don’t- if you’re feeling sluggish or stressed, don’t try to push through, give yourself some grace!

 Make space for reflecting

This extra daylight is a gift and much wanted after the darker, winter days. Take this as a prompt to press pause, to breathe and reconnect with yourself. Ask yourself:

  • Which habits and routines lift you versus drain you?
  • What areas of your life need a gentle reset?

The simple acts of self-care can help you feel more aligned

How will you use the daylight savings shift to reflect, reset, and reconnect with yourself? Share your rituals with us… we’d love to hear from you!
