Sensitive skin can make trying new products tricky. One minute, you’re trying a new product; the next, your skin feels itchy or starts stinging and you’re left wondering what went wrong.

There are lots of wonderful, well-known brands that cater to sensitive skin, but today we wanted to talk about a few that are a little less familiar. We’ve pulled together some of our favourite independent skincare brands that take a careful approach to sensitive and reactive skin.

Having sensitive skin shouldn’t mean you need to give up enjoying skincare. We’ve found some options worth exploring if your skin needs a gentler approach.

How we’ve chosen the brands

For this edit, we haven’t simply looked for brands with the label for sensitive skin’. We’ve been looking for independent brands that demonstrate an understanding of easily irritated and sensitised skin and have designed their ranges with this in mind.

Some of the things we’ve considered include:

Formulation philosophy

We’ve looked for brands that are considered with their ingredients list and have a ‘less is more’ approach

Fragrance free options

Fragrance isn’t necessarily a problem for everyone, but it can be a trigger for some people with reactive skin. We’ve therefore included brands with fragrance-free options, including products formulated without essential oils.

Barrier support

A healthy skin barrier keeps moisture in and provides protection from external irritants. We focused on brands that put gentle cleansing, hydration and barrier support at the heart of their range.

Transparency

This is important to us. Words like ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ on the label are great, but natural doesn’t automatically mean good for sensitive skin. We looked for brands that were clear with their ingredients list and often provided information and knowledge about their ingredients and their impact.

Skincare brands for reactive and sensitive skin

Here are some of our favourite skincare brands for reactive and sensitive skin:

Husk & Seed

husk and seed

Husk and Seed describe their ‘super sensitive’ collection as a ‘haven’ for even the most reactive skin. they’ve completely removed essential oils and artificial fragrances, which are common triggers for irritation. They’re also waterless formulas, so don’t require any harsh synthetic preservatives.

Founders Kelly and Wendy created Husk & Seed because they felt sensitive skin needed a different approach: support, not correction. This led them to create skincare specifically designed with sensitive skin in mind.

By Sarah

by sarah

By Sarah was born from the founder’s own experience of sensitive skin and the belief that it needs a different approach.

The brand focuses on natural, soothing and restorative ingredients, with no essential oils or added fragrance across its range. Its formulations are also made using cold-pressed ingredients.

If you’re looking for a small skincare brand with a particularly simple approach to formulation, By Sarah is worth checking out.

Born of Necessity

Born of Necessity

Born of Necessity is a UK-based, science-led natural skincare brand that specialises in waterless, fragrance-free formulations.

The brand was initially created to help soothe the founder’s mother’s skin during cancer treatment, which inspired an approach centred around gentle, considered skincare.

Its waterless formulations are also an interesting alternative if you’re looking to simplify your routine and reduce the number of ingredients in your products.

Evolve Organic Beauty

Evolve Organic Beauty

Evolve Organic Beauty has a dedicated Sensitive Skin range, with products selected for easily irritated skin. This features fragrance-free options along with what the brand describes as hypoallergenic natural fragrances.

Votary

Votary

Votary is a British skincare brand known for its gorgeous facial oils and its plant-based approach, but it also has products specifically designed for sensitive skin too.

Its sensitive range focuses on supporting the skin rather than overwhelming it with extensive routines.

Pai Skincare

Pai Skincare

Pai Skincare specialises in creating products for sensitive skin and has been doing so since 2007.

Founded by Sarah Brown after her own difficulties finding skincare suitable for sensitive skin, they offer a full range of products from cleansers, moisturisers, facial oils to targeted skincare products. Sensitive skin has been a central part of their story since the beginning, making it a great brand to start your journey with.

Thunderbird Skin

Thunderbird Skincare

Thunderbird Skincare is a small UK skincare brand that focuses on natural, organic and sustainably sourced ingredients. It emphasizes keeping formulations simple and avoiding unnecessary ingredients.

This Indigenous owned and female led company was founded by a mother and daughter team and born of a need to resolve our own 18-year battle with debilitating eczema flares when every other option had failed.

What does sensitive or reactive skin actually mean?

Sensitive skin isn’t necessarily a skin type like dry or oily skin is. Environmental stressors, over exfoliation, hormonal changes or reactions to products can leave your skin sensitised. It’s also very personal: what works beautifully for one person may still cause irritation for another. So bear in mind, even when a product has been formulated with sensitive skin in mind, its worth introducing new products carefully.

So, if your skin is feeling a little sensitive right now, or it’s something you’re already aware of, these are some lovely gentle brands to give your skin the TLC it deserves.

As always, make sure to patch test new products where possible. If your skin is persistently pain or reactive, it might be worth speaking to a dermatologist or another qualified healthcare professional.
