My ideal is to have 3 or 4 perfect cleansers that really work well at ….well.. cleansing my skin. A simple ask you might say, after all how hard can it be to find an effective cleanser? Okay, here goes: I’ve got combination skin, that can be prone to areas of dryness and/or dehydration when it’s in the mood. Consequently, over the years I’ve found that some cleansers designed for combination skin can strip or irritate my skin leaving it feeling and looking like parchment paper. Other cleansers promise a lot (and believe me I’ve tried a lot) but don’t fully deliver, so for example my oily zones will still have the tell tale sebum making an appearance, especially on my nose and temples or they cleanse so well that not only is the sebum gone, but my drier zones are stripped bare! The result of this is that I am constantly on the lookout for the perfect cleanser…and I think I may have found the perfect one for me. I LOVE this cleanser!
The “Zelens Z Detox Clarifying Foaming Cleanser” came into my life purely by chance ( as is often the case in life…just when you’re not consciously looking…BOOM! there it is) I’d been invited along to a lovely evening of skincare education with Dr. Marko Lens founder of Zelens skincare and the cleanser was part of the gift bag that we received. This cleanser only launched in December of 2015.
This is a ‘foaming’ cleanser which is very clearly stated on the packaging; I didn’t realise that it would come out as a foam once you press the pump…I expected it to foam once it came into contact with water, so my first few uses were a bit of an adjustment as I had to let go of the fear that something that doesn’t foam up in the traditional way wouldn’t be effective. IT IS. I started to use it and I love it. I use it with my muslin cloth or with my Clarisonic cleansing brush…its effective either way. I’m sure that it is equally effective if you pump it into your hands and massgae it into your skin, the choice is yours. This cleansing foam leaves my skin clean, perfectly clean without feeling taut. Clean and feeling and looking perfectly balanced and healthy; the sebum zones are clean, the drier zones are balanced and my skin is smooth and ready for the next stage.
Once, I discovered my love of this cleanser I started to wax lyrical about it to anyone who’d listen, particularly my sister who at that stage wasn’t in love or even like with it; when she was on the verge of giving up on it and handing it over to me, silly me persuaded her to try it again……and the rest is history as you’ll see below :)

My Zelens Experience
I call it this because it’s been an education into how amazing ingredients, obviously carefully crafted with scientific precision, can nurture, re tune and reinvigorate the skin.
I wasn’t expecting what this product has given me, but I sure do love having gleaming skin. Okay, so the secret combination has been using their Clarifying Cleanser coupled with their Vitamin C Drops pretty much everyday for the last month.
I’ve learnt to be a bit more receptive to trying new products, so that wasn’t a challenge this time, but after 4 days I had the cleanser packed up and ready to give to Denise as she was LOVING IT!
I found the lack of foaming throughout my cleanse difficult to adjust to… I was using it with my Clarsonic and the foam just didnt’ last. Having said that, my skin was still literally squeaky clean which isn’t something I’d really experienced before.
So I persevered and somehow it just became my regime in the background. What I’ve noticed (and other people have commented), is that my skin seems to have revealed another layer which actually has sebaceous abilities and what was previously dry skin, now requires matting down to reduce its new sheen. Who’d have thought!?!
Needless to say I’m hooked on this. It’s kind of hard to have such a skin revelation and then not have it in your life. The facewash affordable at £48 will last. The Vitamin C drop for me takes me to another level or maintenance priced at £125. Ouch!
What I will say is that they were generously shared at the event and I’ll continue using mine, then take a break, but if I notice my skin reverting to it’s naughty ways, I’ll be the first to sacrifice a few meals out to buy one. Am I bad? No, I just love being the best me.

Zelens say:
A clarifying foaming cleanser formulated to effectively remove environmental pollutants, surface impurities, excess oil and all traces of makeup while respecting skin’s moisture balance. Containing a proprietary blend of mild AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), fermented fruit enzymes and botanical extracts, this gentle exfoliating cleanser enhances skin renewal and smoothes skin’s surface. Enriched with powerful antioxidants from green Shiso leaves. Leaves skin clean, revived, supple and radiant.
There are a lot of really effective, skin friendly ingredients in this formulation which expain why my skin loves it so much, I’ve lifted the details of the active ingredients from the website, so here goes:
Fruit acids: Z Detox contains two fruit-derived alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs): tartaric acid and citric acid.
Tartaric acid: Derived from citrus fruits, this mild AHA demonstrates gentle exfoliating properties and helps to unclog pores blocked by dead skin cells, bacteria and sebum.
It also helps to effectively brighten the skin and lighten areas of dark skin pigmentation.
Citric acid: A mild AHA derived from grapefruit. Promotes gentle exfoliation and accelerates skin renewal.
Protease enzyme: Derived from pumpkin, this enzyme effectively removes dead skin cells and impurities. Leaves the skin cleansed, radiant and silky smooth.
Probiotic complex: Contains Lactobacillus cultures that stimulate the skin’s immune system and protect the skin against environmental stress due to their anti-inflammatory properties.
Shiso leaf (Perilla, Japanese mint): Shiso leaf is well-known in Kampo medicine for its strong detox properties. Rich in polyphenols (particularly Rosmarinic acid) and triterpenoids (particularly Ursolic acid), natural molecules that demonstrate antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-allergic bioactivities.
Shiso leaf acts as a powerful antioxidant defending skin from free radical damage. It helps to prevent skin reactivity and soothes sensitive skin.
Grapes: A bio-liquefied complete grape skin rich in phenols (antioxidants). Demonstrates strong defensive and protective properties.
This active ingredient also inhibits collagen degradation.
Wheat bran: A bio-liquefied wheat bran rich in ferrulic acid and arabinoxylans. Demonstrates antioxidant properties and reactivates the microfibril synthesis that
plumps up wrinkles from the inside. Key components of Cruox are Ferulic Acid – an antioxidant and UV absorber, and Arabinoxylans – which stimulate fibroblast metabolism for microfilm protection.
Apple Fruit Extract: Demonstrates astringent, toning, protective and restructuring properties. Helps promote skin firmness and elasticity.
Lemon fruit extract: Possesses strong anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. It also has skin-tightening and toning effects. Excellent for oily, tired and stressed skin.
Biosaccharides: Naturally derived sugar molecules obtained by fermentation. Demonstrate a strong protective effect against UV light, pollution and heavy metals.
Provide a pleasant second skin effect.
Glycerin: Naturally present in the skin, glycerin used in Zelens products is a completely vegetable molecule derived from plant oils.
It is an excellent humectant, a substance that attracts moisture from the environment and increases the amount of water in the surface layers of the skin.
This cleanser is soap free and oil free
