For a long time, we were told more equals progress when it came to skincare. Adding additional steps to your routine, more actives… that these would lead to the results you’re looking for.

But you’ve noticed recently… skin that used to be resilient and all-tolerant to everything thrown at it is now becoming more reactive, certain products stinging where they didn’t before… and you’re wondering, why now? What’s changed?

There are many reasons why, it could be hormonal, seasonal or even stress related, or you might be experiencing what we like to call ‘barrier burnout’. Where we’ve maybe gotten a little too excited with products, have tried too much and our skin is showing signs, telling you ‘enough now’. Don’t feel bad, it happens to us all.

What we mean by “barrier burnout”

Your skin has a natural protective layer that helps it stay balanced, hydrated and comfortable. When this protective function is supported, skin feels calm and adaptable. When it’s overwhelmed, even gentle routines can start to feel overwhelming. It can start subtle – or sometimes it likes to be dramatic.

How skin becomes overwhelmed (without you realising)

Many of our skincare routines fail not because they’re bad, but because they’re relentless.

Common contributors include:

  • Exfoliating regularly “just to stay on top of things”
  • Using strong actives because they’re trending and not looking into whether your skin needs it
  • Switching products frequently in search of faster results
  • Skipping recovery days altogether
  • Seeing sensitivity as something to push through rather than respond to

Over time, skin can lose its sense of balance because it hasn’t been given the space to recover. Take a breath!

Signs your skin might be asking for a reset

Barrier stress doesn’t look the same for everyone, but it often feels like skin that’s stopped behaving the way it used to.

You might notice:

  • Tightness that comes on quickly after cleansing
  • A dull or flat appearance, even when you hydrate
  • Makeup clinging to dry patches of skin
  • Redness and sensitivity that you don’t normally get, or its worse than usual
  • When your skin starts breaking out but feels dry at the same time
  • Products you used to love suddenly starts to feel like too much

These are often signs that skin needs less stimulation, not more.

Supporting your skin back to balance

When skin feels overwhelmed, the most effective thing you can do is slow everything down and support your skin.

Start by simplifying:

  • Strip your routine back to the essentials for a few weeks
  • Take a break on exfoliation and strong actives entirely
  • Cleanse gently, once or twice daily, without aiming for squeaky-clean skin

Consistency matters more than intensity during this phase. Skin often responds best to routines that are predictable, calm and uncomplicated.

Focus on comfort-first formulas

When rebuilding balance, look for products designed to support hydration and comfort rather than ones that promise skin transformations.

Helpful elements often include:

  • Skin-identical lipids
  • Barrier-supportive moisturisers
  • Lightweight hydrating serums
  • Plant oils known for softness and nourishment

Apply products with a light touch, allowing skin to remain slightly damp before moisturising to help seal in hydration.

Recovery is part of a healthy routine

One of the biggest lessons skincare has taught us recently is that taking a break in your routine is essential and not the sign of a failed routine.

Skin doesn’t need to be challenged every day in order to improve. In fact, many people see their best results when they build intentional recovery time into their week! That could mean alternating nights when you’re using actives or skipping them altogether. It’s all about listening (and feeling) your skin and meeting it where its at.

Protecting balance long-term

Once skin starts to feel more settled, you can start to shift the goal posts from recovery to building resilience again – hurrah!

Simple habits make the biggest difference:

  • Don’t skip the SPF! Daily sun protection will help to protect the skin and reduce ongoing stress
  • Reach for antioxidant support to help skin cope with environmental exposure
  • Adjust your routines seasonally instead of sticking rigidly to one formula – winter skin has very different needs to your summer skin.
  • When you feel ready, reintroduce actives slowly, only if skin is responding well

Aim for consistency and build up slowly!

Who Needs Extra Care

If you have sensitive skin, a damaged barrier, or conditions like eczema or rosacea, go slowly and patch-test products. Introducing too many changes at once can worsen irritation.

When in doubt, especially if you notice persistent redness, burning, or stinging, consult a dermatologist or healthcare professional for personalised guidance.

2026 skin is about knowing where to stop, to knowing your skin’s boundaries and allowing it to be supported so it can build up resilience and be its best, healthiest self.

Sometimes, the best skincare decision you can make, much like what we say in self-care, is choosing to do less and meeting your skin where it is at.
