Throughout history red lips have been significant and symbolic; for some they represent glamour and elegance, for others it’s all about danger and sexiness! Those of us that wear red lipstick often speak of feeling empowered and emboldened by its very presence on our lips. We feel  more confident, courageous and powerful with it on, as if red lipstick has magical qualities. Then there are those of us who simply like red lips. Period. It becomes a signature, for which there is no substitute. When a woman is is the mood to wear red lipstick she’s embodying all of the above and her raw power.

Anita says “Growing up as a tomboy, and recently embracing my inner glamour, I had never been one to wear red lipstick, it always makes me think of an era of glamour, beauty and abundance. Stars like Liz Taylor, Lena Horne, Jane Russell; 1950s glamour, Saturday matinee movies and dressing up in my mums stiletto heels, pearls and red lipstick! I had always fantasized about being one of those beautiful starlets, sipping champagne and watching Billie Holiday croon Stormy Weather but, had never dared to believe that I could achieve this, the surprise was, as soon as that red lip went on, I was that girl dripping with diamonds sipping from a crystal glass. A true Ginger rogers in Calamity Jane, oh so smooth. Yes honey, I became luxe! ”

I am not big on make up rules, because ultimately I believe that you’ve got to do what makes you feel good…but there are some basic tips to choosing and wearing red lipstick so….

Here they are:

  • Texture We are spoilt for choice when it comes to available textures eg. There’s Creme, matte, sheer, gloss, stain, oil. So there is something for everyone whether you want a full on red pout or a softer less done effect.
  • Colour red lip colours can be blue reds all the way to the more orangey Reds, so it’s understandable generally if your skin undertones are
  • Application pencil? Powder? Brush? Straight from the stick? Finger dab?

If you are applying a lipstick and want it to last as long as possible see our post on ‘how to make your lipstick last forever’
