When I first heard about Bio-Synergy After Dark, I was intrigued. Instead of being just another standard protein powder, it’s designed specifically to be taken before bed to support overnight muscle recovery, relaxation and sleep quality – and who doesn’t want to sleep better?

As someone who goes to the gym regularly and is always looking for ways to recover better (without relying on supplements that leave me groggy in the mornings) I knew I needed to try this. If you’ve read my recent review of Bloom’s Clear Whey Protein, you’ll know I’ve been exploring different ways to support my training and recovery.

So I’ve been testing it out for myself and here are my thoughts… from the taste and texture to the ingredients and whether I actually noticed a difference.

What is Bio-Synergy After Dark?

Bio-Synergy After Dark is a night-time protein powder created to be taken before bed. Unlike traditional protein shakes, it combines slow-release casein protein with glycine, magnesium and other nutrients that aim to support overnight muscle recovery, relaxation and sleep quality.

My first impressions

Bio-Synergy After Dark cat approved

Even my cat thought it made the perfect bedtime companion.

The first time I tried it, I made it like a hot chocolate in my Velvetiser (because if you have one, why wouldn’t you?).

It mixed beautifully. This was just a smooth, creamy drink without any lumps or gritty texture, that felt like an evening treat rather than another supplement.

It chose the Belgian Chocolate flavour, which is sweet and indulgent. It is quite sweet, but it certainly satisfied that evening chocolate craving.

At first I used a full serving, but I quickly realised it felt quite heavy on my stomach before bed. I ended up preferring half a scoop mixed with half milk and half water, usually around two to three hours before going to sleep.

Did it actually help?

One thing I noticed almost immediately was that I didn’t necessarily fall asleep quicker.

However, I did feel as though I slept a little more deeply. I also woke up feeling well recovered and ready for my morning gym session, without the grogginess I’ve experienced from some sleep supplements in the past.

Of course, everyone’s experience will be different, but that deeper sleep was the biggest benefit I personally noticed.

What I like about Bio-Synergy After Dark

  • It’s built around recovery, not sedation. The supplement isn’t trying to knock you out, its focused on nutrients to naturally support overnight recovery through a careful blend of slow-digesting protein, amino acids and minerals.
  • It contains an effective dose of glycine. Each serving provides 3.2g of glycine, which is a dose that research suggests may help improve sleep quality and support overnight recovery.
  • The casin-rich protein will help with overnight muscle recovery and satiety. Unlike whey protein, casein digests slowly, releasing amino acids gradually throughout the night.
  • It feels like an evening treat. Rather than feeling like another supplement to add to your list, it feels like having a comforting hot chocolate before bed, something to look forward to.

A few things to consider

  • It’s on the sweeter side, which I enjoy but it won’t be to everyone’s taste. Rather than tasting like cocoa powder or dark chocolate, it has a creamier, milk chocolate-style flavour.
  • The magnesium bisglycinate dose is a little low in this – it is about 150mg per serving, less than the recommended 200-400mg, but this could be a great supportive supplement and you could take it alongside a dedicated magnesium supplement.

If you’re looking for a supplement that supports overnight muscle recovery, encourages better sleep quality and doubles as a comforting bedtime drink, I think Bio-Synergy After Dark is well worth considering.

It’s not going to magically send you to sleep within minutes, but it may help support your body’s overnight recovery while you sleep, without leaving you feeling groggy the next morning. I’ll certainly keep using it, especially after tougher training days, knowing I’m giving my body some extra support while I rest.
