SPF is an important part of our daily skincare routine, protecting your skin against sun damage from those harmful UV rays.

It’s Sun Awareness Week and here are some sunscreen tips you’ll wish you knew sooner.

You should use SPF all year round

Yes, it’s something we’re all talking about now the sun is making a regular appearance, but did you know you should still be wearing SPF even when its cloudy? The sun may not feel warm or strong on your skin, but the UV rays are still reaching your skin, increasing your risk of sun damage and more.

Reapply every 2 hours

It’s important to reapply your SPF regularly as the chemical ingredients within sunscreen break down when exposed to sunlight and air, therefore reducing it’s effectiveness. Every two hours is a good start. Sunscreen needs to be applied frequently, even more often when sweating or swimming. The best time to apply sunscreen is 10-15 minutes before you go outside.

Follow the two-finger rule for your face and neck

A good rule of thumb to make sure you’re applying the right amount of SPF for your face and neck is to dispense the sunscreen along the length of your pointer and middle finger. This is enough product to protect your face and neck effectively.

A shot glass amount is perfect for the body

Don’t know how much to use on your body? A shot glass is usually enough for someone with a swimsuit on – but use more if needed. That’s about two tablespoons. Don’t skimp on it!

Don’t forget to protect your lips

Your lips are delicate and need protecting too! Look for a lip balm with SPF to make sure your lips are protected from the harmful rays.
