If you enjoy wearing perfume, then it’s possible that the purchasing experience has probably made your most memorable perfume purchasing experiences special. That experience can be a distinct pleasure, where we can explore fragrances in a calm, relaxed manner, hearing about the perfume house and the story of how it created the perfume or it can be a rather manic experience where you’re pounced on from all sides by eager perfume bottle wielding sales people… often leaving the store with a headache and possibly a perfume that you don’t really LOVE.
Over the last few years there’s been an influx of niche perfume houses, many of them founded by women with a clear vision and a passion for sustainability, but equally important is the fact that there is a compelling story behind the creation of their fragrances and I love that. There is something unique to delight every type of fragrance lover, from floral to woody and everything in between as well as the opportunity to be introduced to unique fragrance blends.
I’m always excited to discover brands who are working to create ‘pure fumes’, defined as perfumes that are made without harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates and artificial colours… opening the world of fragrance up to those who have sensitivities.
I’ve focused on four unique brands here all female founded; and of course they are all beautifully presented in display worthy packaging, some are genderless and they smell amazing.
Medeau Cedar Noir
This brand was born out of the owners desire for a chemical free perfume range, English flowers inspire this UK based brand and is 100% vegan. There are four unique fragrances in the collection one of which is specifically unisex called ‘cedar noir’ which is also the one that I’ve tried. It’s a powerful blend that is pheromone reactive, so that it behaves differently on each skin type perfect for sharing with your loved one without each of you spell exactly the same. The base of this is amber accentuated by cedarwood, citrus, geranium, anise, bergamot and black pepper. This remind me of nature for grown-ups–earthy and sensual.
All the brands packaging has unique floral designs and sleek bottles are definitely dressing table worthy.
Art de Parfum Discovery Collection
Art de Parfum is an independent, proudly ethical brand that exudes a contemporary French sophistication at every touchpoint. Their perfumes are a journey of discovery, designed to create moments that will be treasured in our memories.
Founder Ruta Degutyte always paid attention to the scents around her and was inspired by a trip to the South of France, where she began to learn more about perfumery. She created Art De Perfum as a natural next step to what she felt passionate about – applying all the knowledge she gained from working for blue chip corporates, as well as her experience as an independent brand marketing consultant.
All Art de Parfum fragrances are 100% cruelty-free, environmentally friendly, and free of materials that add to third-world exploitation.
Revolution De La Fleur Sana Jardin
This brand produces luxury fragrances with a focus not just on providing luxury perfumes but also with a mission of social impact and the economic empowerment of women, the women in question are the flower harvesters of Morocco.
The brand has 10 unique fragrances with matching candles for five of them, as you would imagine they use only the finest ingredients…
It’s easy to fall in love with a gorgeous packaging as well which is bold and sexy in shades of orange and fuchsia pink.
I’ve tried ‘Tiger by her side’ which is a heady blend of Patchouli, Incense, Vanilla, Coriander, Amber, Bergamot and Rose creating an exotic sensual scent with excellent Sillage. honestly, I don’t have a problem wearing this whether it’s winter or summer it’s all about the mood.
I’ve also tried ‘Revolution de la fleur’, A sexy floral on a base of sandalwood and vanilla the florals used heroes frangipani, neroli, Jasmine and Ylang Ylang. it’s sensual & exotic thanks to the frangipani.
Maya Njie Tobak
I guarantee any perfume purchased from the glorious brand will delight, thanks to its founders unique interpretation of fragrances. Maya Nije combines her West Africa and Sweden cultural influences and links them to her childhood memories of family life.
There are 5 fragrances in the collection and they are beautifully distinctive, addictive and unisex. These are vegan and produced in small batches making use of natural and synthetic elements- combining nature with science.
The packaging is an ode to times past with imagery based on the founders family pictures from the 70’s. I’m a big fan of Tabac which is somehow really comforting with its sense of times past. Its a blend of some of my favourite ingredients like Tonka, Musk, Leather and vetiver but uniquely presented in a way that makes it difficult to pinpoint where each ingredient is, making this a blend unlike any other. Love it.
