Let’s face it, Winter wreaks havoc with our skin, the combination of long term cold temperatures and central heating can really dry us out and our lips are often the first places to suffer.
Before we even get onto lip care it helps to remember that we need to make sure that we maintain our hydration levels. Your lips could be getting dry because you’re slightly dehydrated – so make sure to drink more! It’s worth taking stock of what you’re eating too because your diet can have a direct effect on your skin and lips. Fruit and vegetables high in Omega-3 help restore elasticity and keep lips looking youthful. Cranberries are also recommended. It’s so, so tempting to lick your lips when they are dry and sore but this actually makes matters worse because it draws out the moisture, so try to avoid it if you can.

When our lips are really suffering they can be dry, rough and flaky and one of the best ways to deal with this is to use a lip scrub

A good lip scrub will gently exfoliate your lips to remove dead skin… leaving them smooth and soft and ready to absorb your lip balm or treatment, use a couple of times per week or as directed.

These scrubs are a great option… and they also contain nourishing ingredients to help moisturise and protect your lips… amazing!

Burts Bees Conditioning Lip Scrub

burts-bees

This is quite a gentle lip scrub but contains great nourishing ingredients, which is an added bonus. Unlike many traditional lip scrubs that have a sugar base, what makes this one quite unique is that it utilises honey crystals to gently exfoliate the lips, which I really like. It feels nourishing on the lips but still does the job – it also smells delicious. It’s gentle enough for regular use and feels great. The responsibly sourced Beeswax gently conditions and hydrates the lips. The Honey crystals gently slough away at the dead skin, honey has antimicrobial and healing properties to strengthen the lips.

We’ve reviewed this scrub along with their overnight treatment here.

ByBi – ‘Buffer’ Lip Scrub

bybi

The lovely scrub is pink and uses brown sugar to exfoliate the lips. It’s in a tube format, so easy to squeeze out the amount you use and apply to the lips.

It has great ingredients to soften and nourish the lips as it exfoliates including shea butter and sweet almond oil. It also contains cinnamon, which you can smell in the scrub, but the scent certainly isn’t overpoweringly cinnamony.

It’s not too oily either, which is probably due to the shea butter content, which is the first ingredient in the list, but the lips still feel nourished after use.

Too Faced – Exfoliating Peach Sugar Lip Scrub

too-faced

This scrub from Too Faced has more of an oily texture to it, so feels very nourishing – but it’s definitely a little messier! It contains oils including Jojoba seed oil, Grace Seed oil, Sunflower Seed Oil and Coconut Oil to nourish and condition. The sugar basis on this is Sucrose – which is table sugar.

It’s pretty and pink and smells like peaches – delicious!

Herbal Dynamics Beauty – Acai and Mango Sugar Lip Scrub

herbal-dynamics

This is the driest lip scrub of the bunch (along with the ELF scrub, which is in a stick format). It gives the most exfoliating scrub too. Of you’ve got super flaky lips, this one is great to really get in and scrub away at the lips. The sugar content in this seems to be a lot more prevalent than some of them. It’s a lot more compact, which is something I really like. I feel like I’m really getting to work at my lips with this – but it’s not something I could use every day!

The oils and butters do leave the lips feeling nourished, but it’s more like you’ve applied a lip balm, your lips aren’t left feeling oily.

This lip scrub contains cocoa butter, pistachio oil, macademia oil and vitamin E. The sugar basis in this scrub is also Sucrose (table sugar) to exfoliate the lips.#

e.l.f. Lip Scrub Exfoliator Brown Sugar

Love that this scrub comes in a stick format. It reduces the mess as you don’t have to try and scoop the product from a pot. It exfoliates really well. Like the Herbal Dynamics Beauty scrub, this one gives a more hardcore scrub, which is great if you’re really needing it to give your lips an intense scrub.

It has a great ingredients list too – infused with Vitamin E, Shea Butter, Avocado, Grape and Jojoba Oils to hydrate and exfoliate. The sugar basis in this scrub is also Sucrose (table sugar). We have the shade ‘Brown Sugar’
